Densiphalt was specified by the client for a new highbay warehouse at their National Distribution Centre in Bracknell, Berks. The project comprised 3000sqm internal new build application required to provide for 100KN rack leg loads for racking systems, and 200sqm external refurbishment area to existing concrete slab.
Phase one consisted of 3000sqm internal new build pavement system. CIP proposed a design make up of:
• 40mm Densiphalt
• 10mm Regulating layer
• 150mm CBM (Cement Bound Material) – 7 days curing
Onto Type 1 layer of stone to achieve a 30% CBR (California Bearing Ratio) reading as a suitable construction platform for the Densiphalt pavement.
These works were carried out with the Main Contractor Moss Construction Ltd. CIP sub-contracted the supply and lay of the basecourse and open graded asphalt materials to a recommended supplier, WT Construction Ltd. They supplied and laid the Open Graded Asphalt to the spec required by CIP for the Densiphalt to perform to its full potential. The Open Graded Asphalt was laid with a Laserpave machine to achieve a surface tolerance of +-3mm over a 3m edge.
The specification required for the Asphalt is to be laid with a 10mm aggregate size to achieve a 25%-30% void ratio and must be rolled using a dead weight roller with no vibration to ensure minimum compaction. The asphalt was laid at a temperature of circa 160°C and cooled to 30°C before flooding the asphalt matrix with the Densiphalt microsilica mortars, which were evenly spread using rubber squeegees. The completed area was ready for trafficking within 24 hours.
The Densiphalt jointless surfacing system delivers huge advantages over other construction methods in new build & refurbishment situations. They are as follows
