BAA Plc Gatwick Airport | 1000sqm External refurbishment | Dyer & Butler | Foster Yeoman Ltd |
BAA plc, selected Densiphalt as the refurbishment solution for Gatwick Airport’s busy Stand 50 at its North Terminal. Approximately 1000m² of Densiphalt was installed. Densiphalt has been successfully used for over a decade at Copenhagen Airport as a jointless, fuel resistant surface material, ideally suited for aircraft hardstandings such as Stand 50. CIP proposed the replacement of concrete blocks, bedding sand and contaminated regulating layer with 50mm Densiphalt surface course on an interlayer of High Modulus Binder Course. The works were carried out with Gatwick’s Term Contractor, Dyer & Butler who laid the porous asphalt support layer to close tolerances under CIP’s supervision. CIP supplied and laid the Densiphalt mortar to the porous layer using its specialist installation team.
The characteristic rapid early strength gain of the Densiphalt proprietary microsilica based mortar, typically gaining 87% of its 28 day flexural strength within 24 hours and achieving a 3 day laboratory determined mixture stiffness at 20C of 6.9 GPa, meant that the stand could be reopened to aircraft after 24 hours.
The surface was grit blasted to ensure a safe, non-slip surface for servicing staff and passengers, especially in wet weather. These works were carried out by Specialist Surface Preparation Ltd and to give the surface the overall smooth/clean durable finish after the grit blasting procedure SSP Ltd removed any excess by using a magnetic sweeper.
Courtesy of Gatwick Airport Ltd and BAA’s Pavement team, CIP has been able to monitor the condition of the Densiphalt surface at stand 50. Nine months after installation the client reported its successful performance and expressed satisfaction in the solution offered by CIP Ltd.
